A Contemporary Ink Artist Exploring Identity Through Language, Memory and Mark-Making
Biography
Alex Fu is a Hong Kong-based contemporary artist whose practice explores the evolving relationship between language, identity, memory, and cultural expression.
Before entering the arts professionally, Fu worked within the fashion industry, where he developed an understanding of visual presentation, branding, and the emotional power of personal style. At the age of twenty-eight, he started to learn the art of tattooing, a decision that marked a significant turning point in his creative life. Through tattooing, he discovered a medium that combined technical precision with deeply personal storytelling, allowing him to engage directly with the ways individuals choose to represent themselves.
Over the years, Fu established himself within the international tattoo community, working as a guest artist in Spain and Japan while building a reputation for his distinctive approach to Chinese calligraphy-inspired tattooing. His practice became increasingly focused on the expressive potential of language and the visual power of written forms, leading him to expand beyond the body and into contemporary art.
Drawing from traditional Chinese calligraphic aesthetics while embracing the visual energy of contemporary urban culture, Fu creates works that exist between text and image, tradition and transformation. His compositions often investigate the emotional resonance of language, exploring how written characters can function not only as carriers of meaning but also as abstract visual forms capable of communicating memory, tension, intimacy, and personal identity.
In recent years, his projects have been featured by The Beat Asia, presented through collaborations with TattooSays, start from zero to exhibited at Hysan Place - Rat's Cave Tattoo, and included in charitable and community-oriented initiatives. Through both independent practice and collaborative projects, Fu continues to examine how contemporary audiences engage with cultural heritage through evolving visual languages.
Today, his practice encompasses painting, calligraphy-based works, tattooing, commissioned projects, and public-facing cultural collaborations. Working from Hong Kong, he positions language not as a fixed system of communication, but as a living visual medium capable of connecting personal narratives with broader cultural experiences.
關於 Alex
Artist Statement
My practice begins with language. Within Chinese calligraphy, I find a visual system that contains history, memory, and emotion, yet remains open to continual reinterpretation.
Growing up in Hong Kong and working across different cultural environments has shaped my understanding of identity as something fluid rather than fixed. Through ink, gesture, and mark-making, I explore how personal experiences become embedded within visual forms.
Many of my works begin with a single character, phrase, or concept. As the process develops, meaning becomes less literal and more experiential. What remains is not simply language, but an emotional trace — a record of movement, memory, and presence.
Rather than preserving tradition as a static form, I seek to engage with it as a living practice. My work aims to create a dialogue between heritage and contemporary experience, inviting viewers to encounter language beyond its conventional function.
