ROOT OF ALL — 萬惡 is a mixed media work by Alex Fu, created with Xuan paper, burnt paper, and fragments of international banknotes. Centred on the Chinese phrase “萬惡,” the work questions whether money is a tool of freedom, a symbol of desire, or the origin of human corruption.

The composition reveals the character through absence and exposure: burnt Xuan paper cuts into layers of currency, allowing fragments of global value systems to appear beneath the calligraphic form. Alex Fu’s background in Chinese calligraphy and tattooing gives the work a raw physicality, where language feels cut, scarred, and marked. This piece may appeal to collectors interested in contemporary Chinese calligraphy, social commentary, material experimentation, and works with a sharper cultural edge.

《萬惡》以燒過的宣紙覆蓋各國紙幣，讓文字不是被寫出來，而是被燒開、被挖出來。

「萬惡」令人自然想起金錢，但作品沒有直接給答案。錢可以是生活的工具，也可以成為慾望、權力與失衡的開端。被燒穿的宣紙像一道傷口，露出底下不同國家的貨幣圖像，提醒我們價值從來不只是數字，而是人如何選擇、追逐、佔有與失去。這件作品帶有批判性，也保留一種冷靜的觀看。

About the Artist

Alex Fu is a Hong Kong Chinese calligraphy artist and tattoo artist whose work moves between paper, skin and cultural identity. His practice treats Chinese characters not only as written language, but as visual marks carrying memory, emotion and personal presence.

Through calligraphy, tattoo culture and contemporary material surfaces, Fu develops a language that connects Eastern typography, bodily permanence and Hong Kong’s underground creative culture.
