Artwork Statement

Self-Reliance is a collected original artwork by Hong Kong artist Alex Fu, built around the Chinese characters 堅持 — persistence, endurance, and the decision to continue. The work uses mirror, hand-cut calligraphy, and paper to transform written language into a reflective surface. Rather than presenting the word as a flat inscription, the mirror allows the viewer to become part of the artwork, suggesting that persistence is not something given from outside, but something repeatedly recognised within oneself. The sharp cut forms and muted grey surface carry a direct physicality that connects to Alex Fu’s background in tattooing, where line, body, and identity meet. As a collected work, it holds strong value as both a conceptual object and a contemporary Chinese calligraphy piece.
